“Imagine losing your youth in your 40s… It’s harrowing to need help with simple tasks I could manage on my own just months ago.”
As an individual ages, the likelihood of developing arthritis increases, particularly in the hands. Severe arthritis can significantly reduce an individual’s ability to perform everyday tasks, such as cooking and cleaning. The condition often limits grip strength, making food preparation dangerous and increasingly challenging. This results in a loss of independence, as individuals may struggle to safely and effectively prepare meals for themselves and others. This causes a great deal of anxiety for secondary and tertiary stakeholders, while simultaneously impacting the individuals self-confidence.
The blend of primary and secondary research offers invaluable insights. Through thorough primary research, it was clear that the prevalence of arthritis significantly detriments mental health and self-image. The challenges of ageing and losing your youth is difficult enough; we do not need to reinforce this feeling and make people feel alone. Rather than reinforcing the stigma that conditions like arthritis are synonymous with old age, the Carve and Care enables an individual to regain their independence. Supporting this, secondary research shows that this stigma and its emotional effects are not unique to Australia, but are experienced globally.
Driven by the mission to enable individuals to retain autonomous over their ageing process, the Carve and Care was created. Rather than relying on your family or a million assistive devices, the individual can own a high-quality chopping board that satisfies multiple kitchen needs. Designed to enhance safety, boost self-confidence and restore independence, the Carve and Care empowers individuals to take back control.
The Carve and Care reinvents the way that we perceive chopping boards. It integrates multiple assistive devices to create a holistic solution suited to anyone’s ability. Using the Carve and Care provides partners, family, and friends with peace of mind, thanks to its enhanced safety features that accommodate declining grip strength and dexterity. Moreover, it was crafted with universal design principles, benefiting not only primary users but also secondary and tertiary stakeholders should they decide to utilise the product. The Carve and Care doesn’t reinvent the wheel—it simply elevates the functionality of the everyday chopping board we all know.
