A majority of riders, particularly beginners and intermediate users, consistently wear basic safety gear like helmets and gloves, with approximately 65% indicating regular helmet use. However, the adoption of advanced protective equipment such as chest protectors, spine guards, and knee pads remains low, with only around 30% of riders using these added protective measures. The survey responses suggest that while advanced riders are more likely to wear comprehensive gear due to the technical nature of their trails, many casual riders express reluctance, often due to concerns over comfort, flexibility, and the perceived bulkiness of traditional protective equipment.

Additionally, the study highlights a gap in communication and emergency preparedness among riding groups. Most riders rely on cell service for assistance in emergencies, which may not always be reliable in remote or forested environments. This gap underlines a significant need for integrated alert systems that can enhance response times, improve communication, and increase overall safety for riders in isolated areas.

The findings also point to an increased demand for ergonomic protective solutions. Riders expressed a strong preference for gear that provides full protection while allowing unrestricted movement, particularly on challenging trails. The insights gathered from this research underline an opportunity to innovate within the mountain biking safety gear market by developing products that bridge the gaps in both protective coverage and emergency response, catering to the diverse needs of riders across experience levels.

Prototyping/Modelling Process

The modelling process for the RibSafe vest focused on 3D design and prototyping, emphasizing ergonomic fit and flexibility to ensure rider comfort. The design adapted the thought of rugby headgear materials for torso protection, with iterative adjustments to the ribbed structure, achieving both effective protection and freedom of movement for mountain bikers.

App

The RibSafe app is an essential companion for mountain bikers, designed to enhance safety and group communication. Linked to the RibSafe garment’s sensor module, the app detects falls and assesses impact severity, automatically alerting riding partners and, if needed, emergency services. It displays vital signs like heart rate for quick access, helping responders assess the rider’s condition. Additionally, the app allows riders to share real-time locations, track each other’s status, and check in before and after rides, fostering a connected and secure experience on the trails. RibSafe’s app ensures faster response times and improved group safety for all users.
