In many restaurant environments, servers are required to make cocktails in addition to serving customers. This double duty is inefficient, time consuming and often delays other aspects of service. The introduction of a Shakr simplified the workflow, allowing servers to focus on their primary roles while ensuring consistent cocktail quality. This innovation improves efficiency and provides better customer service while reducing the physical demands of the bartending process to a certain extent.
In preparation for the project, we conducted a survey and research to understand the key challenges in the bartending industry. Our study focused on identifying and analyzing issues faced in bars, restaurants, clubs, and hotels.
Our research methods included a survey of 31 industry professionals, including bartenders from restaurants, bars, and nightclubs. We also conducted interviews with four industry professionals and observed their working conditions to gain deeper insights.
Our research identified five key opportunities within the bartending industry:
– Tool improvement
– RSI (Repetitive Strain Injuries) and work fatigue
– Cleaning inefficiencies
– Ingredient waste
– Automation potential
After initial concept sketches and discussions on project feasibility, we chose to design an automated cocktail shaker specifically aimed at improving efficiency for staff in high-demand restaurant environments.
Here’s a closer look at the inner workings of Shakr. It operates with a motor-driven linkage system that ensures efficient shaking. The design includes a spring and groove mechanism, making it easy to attach and remove the shaker, which is securely held in place with a pull pin.
Shakr is designed for simple, hassle-free use, making it easy for users to operate without confusion. When placing the shaker with ingredients into the machine, users only need to set the bottom of the shaker in place and push the top clamp upward. The spring mechanism will lock it in place automatically, while the pull pin holds it firmly. To remove the shaker, simply pull the pin and lift the shaker out. Shakr also features a straightforward interface, allowing users to adjust speed, frequency, and shaking time on the main screen. Additionally, there are three preset templates, enabling quick setup and operation for common uses.
